Step by step
Clean and prep the surface. Wash the area with soap and water, then wipe with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and let it dry completely. Skip household cleaners with wax or oils — decals won't stick to them. Work indoors between 50°F and 90°F, out of direct sun.
Position and make a hinge. Hold the decal where you want it and level it by eye (or with a bit of masking tape as a guide). Lay a strip of tape across the middle as a hinge, then flip one half up.
Peel the backing (dry method). On the flipped half, peel the paper backing away from the decal — not the decal off the backing. If the design lifts with the paper, lay it back down and re-rub that spot.
Squeegee from the hinge outward. With the backing gone, fold the half back down and squeegee from the hinge to the edge in firm, overlapping strokes — center-out to push air ahead of you. Repeat for the second half.
Wet method for big or flat pieces. For large decals, windows and smooth flat panels: mist the surface AND the sticky side with a drop of dish soap in water, slide the decal into position, then squeegee the water out from the center. It buys you time to reposition.
Remove the transfer tape. Peel the clear transfer tape back slowly at a sharp (near-180°) angle. If the design lifts with it, press the tape back down, re-squeegee, and try again slower.
Chase out air bubbles. Small bubbles: prick one edge with a pin and push the air out with your thumb. Big ones: lift that section and re-lay it. On glass a warm (not hot) hair dryer helps the vinyl relax.
Let it cure. Give the adhesive 24–48 hours before washing, and avoid a pressure washer for a week. That's it — you're stuck for the long haul.
